DmOS and Network Automation via DmView

Tatiane Figueiredo – Training Instructor

Internet providers and telecommunications operators are constantly seeking solutions that improve the management of their network assets, from deployment to maintenance, avoiding traditional access via CLI – Command Line Interface or its graphical interfaces. In this scenario, automation emerges as a vital element.
Automation reduces the need for manual interventions in configurations, whether routine or highly complex, such as MPLS. This approach speeds up processes and minimizes errors. Identifying and monitoring problems in the network becomes more intuitive, with benefits that range from headquarters to the end customer, as when configuring a CPE. Such optimization is palpable in LAN, WAN, Wireless, datacenters or Cloud networks.

There are two predominant approaches: the use of pre-developed applications with possible integrations via APIs and the construction of customized applications using programming languages. Both facilitate a range of tasks, including:

  • Inventory monitoring and management;
  • Device configuration and provisioning;
  • Network supervision and SLAs;
  • Real-time data collection, such as firmware versions and traffic;
  • Graphical panels for predictive analysis;
  • Device testing and verification.

The incorporation of automation brings multiple benefits: it reduces manual errors, saves time on provisioning tasks, improves downtime management by reducing maintenance windows and redefines the role of the operator, which becomes more strategic, avoiding repetitive manual tasks prone to failures.

Within the scope of tools dedicated to automation, Datacom's DmView platform stands out as a valuable resource. Working in Linux or Windows environments, DmView, when integrated with switches and OLTs that operate with the DmOS system, demonstrates its full potential. DmOS, designed with a focus on modern modularity, adheres to the NETCONF YANG framework, as specified by RFC 4742, ensuring full compatibility with automation initiatives.

Additionally, DmView comes with free, perpetual licensing to manage up to 15 devices and supports up to 5 simultaneous users. It is also capable of managing 2000 Datacom CPEs and 100 CPEs from other manufacturers via TR-069.

And speaking of TR-069, this item makes a total difference in the management of CPEs, allowing the sending of configurations through its WAN interface, carried out by a central server called ACS,

present within the DmView structure, thus offering a single platform to the telecommunications provider or operator.

DmView presents itself as an ideal tool for managing assets and automating your needs, acting on points such as:

Backup configuration management: Backing up assets is essential, whether for quick recovery in the event of downtime or equipment replacement. It can be carried out manually or scheduled according to the needs of the environment.

Identification of changes in real time: Collecting status information for each of the interfaces, alarms and configurations allows the network manager to act quickly.

 Configuration automation: Customization and application of configuration scripts for provisioning circuits and functionalities, both on one and on several devices simultaneously, reducing time and effort.

Equipment management: In just one screen, all equipment added to the platform can be managed in a panel that contains the main information, easily accessed such as firmware version, equipment status (normal, minor and major), serial number, use of CPU and memory.

Inventory management: All equipment information on a single screen, with simple and visual signs for quick and accurate action. From interface type and speed, to status and traffic information.

Audit: Record of all actions carried out by users, whether configuration, template creation and access login.

There are several resources available on the platform that you can check out through the link - https://dmviewdemo.datacom.com.br:8101 with the administrator credential and administrator password.

DmView also has documentation that guides the use of Northbound APIs, detailing the following topics:

  • Creation of CLI or TR-069 template application;
  • Location, addition/removal and updating of a single or multiple pieces of equipment;
  • Credentials update;
  • Hostname changes and creation/removal of an Ethernet link.

Conclusion:

As the digital era advances, network automation assumes undeniable relevance, allowing managers and operators unprecedented efficiency in controlling and monitoring their assets. Datacom's DmView solution positions itself as a strategic ally in this scenario, enhancing network management and optimization. However, it is worth recognizing that automation is not restricted to ready-made solutions.

Many providers and operators are exploring the development of their own applications, using programming languages such as Python, Ansible and others, adapting them to the specific needs of their networks. It is important to highlight that our equipment is fully compatible with such approaches, ensuring even greater flexibility in the automation journey.

We highlight that Datacom has a complete structure at its headquarters where in-person training is offered (check availability with the commercial team), as well as an online training platform (DATACOM EAD). During the training, you will be able to configure different topologies and application scenarios, in addition to being able to count on the help of our professionals in a series of good practices that will greatly help in the operation of your network.
